Why Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

How your dentists in Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, FL can help with wisdom teeth pain

How much do you know about wisdom teeth? If you are confused about whether or not they need to be removed, you are not alone. There is a lot of good and bad information out there about wisdom teeth, and you need to know the facts.

Drs. Sunitha Sirivolu and Manoj Patel at Family Dentist of Palm Beach offer comprehensive dental care, including wisdom teeth removal. They have two convenient office locations in Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, and Lake Worth, Palm Beach, FL to help you.

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars which typically begin to erupt from ages 17 to 25. Some wisdom teeth will never erupt. These are known as “impacted” wisdom teeth. People can have anywhere from zero to four wisdom teeth, and in rare cases, some people have had more than four wisdom teeth.

You may need to have your wisdom teeth removed if you:

  • Are experiencing pressure and pain in your jaws or mouth
  • Have wisdom teeth that are crowding other teeth, due to insufficient room
  • Can’t keep your wisdom teeth clean because they are so far back
  • Have tooth decay or other damage in your wisdom teeth
  • Have wisdom teeth that are erupting sideways or out of position

Wisdom teeth that are encased in bone and will never erupt are often removed; if impacted wisdom teeth are left in place, there is a chance the wisdom teeth may form cysts around them, which can destroy the bone.

Wisdom teeth should be removed at a young age, typically when you are between 17 and 25 years old because tissue heals better and the bone fills in more quickly.
